Olivia Dean has already been on an incredible journey at the age of 24 performing at Glastonbury Festival this year, the singer-songwriter has released her debut album ‘Messy‘.

Co-written with Matt Hales, Olivia embarks on a journey throughout the twelve tracks where she explores the themes of self-discovery, experiencing the pain of breakups and learning about life. With lyrics written from the heart and a like of Motown music coming off from the album, it is easy to say that ‘Messy‘ is a collection of songs filled with emotion and honest words.

Already having released the hugely popular ‘The Hardest Part‘ on various music streaming platforms in 2020, it  has shown that Olivia has a talent for producing exquisite lyrical content for our ears, so it was no surprise when the album was just as captivating as her previous songs.

Opening the album with ‘UFO‘, Olivia describes how living life can feel for everyone, powerfully singing about the loss of direction in life is like flying a UFO with no experience, it shows we can all relate to the singer about how life feels for all of us in a certain moment throughout the years.

While having this first track on the album, shows that the singer is not afraid to delve into her inner emotions and perform songs which tug at the heartstrings. Following on from the first song, Olivia explores the exciting feeling of diving into a relationship, despite knowing that it could be toxic, but she risks this anyway. Songs such as ‘Dive‘ and ‘Danger‘ teach us that it is good to be brave and that you never know what could work unless you try to see for yourself.

Transitioning from the highs to the lows, she conveys the pain when recognising toxic aspects in  past relationships can leave a scar on your heart, and with this comes along with empowering, passionate lyrics which shine through into ‘Messy‘ and ‘Everybody’s Crazy‘. Throughout ‘Messy’, while the slow-burning, Motown-like music provides us with moving emotions, Olivia does this by herself with her smooth, distinct vocals which adds a heartfelt atmosphere to the songs.

Since performing at Glastonbury Festival this year, we can already tell Olivia is the star in the making and rising in the music industry, and with her new album out, we cannot wait to see where she goes next with her music.
